#Conserving the Orchard Heaterâ € â € When the orc #Conserving the Orchard Heaterâ €
â €
When the orchard heater arrived at the museum, it had a lot of condition issues. In addition to the large amount of corrosion, the heater was coated with oil, greasy dirt, crusty soot, and spider webs (including dead spiders!) The first step was a complete cleaning with brushes, rubber scrapers and pointed wooden sticks. All surfaces were then degreased using mineral spirits.â €
â €
The #orchard heater’s exterior corrosion was treated by applying ten coats of a heated mixture of tannic and phosphoric acid. To ensure a smooth and even appearance, each coat is dried by brushing it continuously. Additional coats can only be applied to a dry surface.⠀
â €
The tannic acid works by reacting with the rusty iron and converting it to ferric tannate. Ferric tannate is a protective, smooth blue-black or purple-black surface on the iron object. The phosphoric acid in the mixture promotes a more complete reaction.â €

Today is Vimy Ridge Day.â € â € On this day, 104 y Today is Vimy Ridge Day.â €
â €
On this day, 104 years ago, the battle of #VimyRidge began. Canadian victory at Vimy was a key moment in #WWI. It was also a decisive moment in Canadian history. Canadian soldiers succeeded where the French and British armies had failed. For the first time, Canadians had a collective sense of national pride and identity. Vimy helped Canada step out of the shadows of its colonial past, and take a seat at the international table.â €
â €
Today, we honour and thank those who served.â €
