SUMMARY:Peace Crane Origami Workshop
DESCRIPTION:At just two years old\, Sadako survived the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima\, Japan\, on August 6th\, 1945. She later developed leukemia\, known at the time as the “A-bomb disease.” While in the hospital\, her friend shared a legend: fold 1\,000 paper cranes and your wish for healing could come true. Sadako’s efforts to fold cranes sparked a global movement for peace. Today\, origami cranes are sent from all over the world to the Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima to honour her legacy. \n\n\n\nThis May\, we invite you to join us in continuing Sadako’s mission by folding as many peace cranes as we can. Our goal is to mail the cranes to the Children’s Peace Monument as a symbol of hope\, resilience\, and peace. \n\n\n\nBroken Promises is a travelling exhibition from the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre which explores the dispossession of Japanese Canadians in the 1940s. It is on display at the Okanagan Heritage Museum until June 22nd\, 2025. \n\n\n\nTogether\, let’s spread a message of healing and unity—one crane at a time. Be part of this powerful initiative. See you on May 3rd! \n\n\n\nThis event is by donation. SUMMARY:The Incredibly Dangerous World of the Ice Age Peoples
DESCRIPTION:Recent research has revealed an incredible new picture of Ice Age life. Contrary to earlier beliefs that people arrived just as a major extinction event happened around 10\,000 years ago\, we now know that they coexisted with a diverse and dangerous range of extinct animals for up to 17\,000 years! These Ice Age Peoples shared their world with massive predators much larger and more formidable than any we know today. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an upcoming talk with Dr. Robert Young who will take you back to this thrilling\, untamed era\, showcasing the extraordinary and perilous lives of the Ice age peoples. Don’t miss this chance to explore their incredible story and the challenges they faced! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Robert Young is an Associate Professor in Earth\, Environmental\, and Geographical Sciences at UBCO\, where he has been contributing his expertise since 2003. He earned his BSc. and MSc. From the University of Alberta and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Calgary.  \n\n\n\nDr. Young has a passion for public education\, which is evident from his extensive work in the field. His Ph.D. research significantly contributed to the Ice Age Gallery at the Royal Alberta Museum. He has also served as a curatorial consultant for the Royal Tyrrell Museum’s Quaternary Gallery\, as well as the Okanagan Heritage Museum’s Geology Gallery. Dr. Young has delivered numerous public lectures over the years\, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for Earth sciences with diverse audiences.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick for tickets
