SUMMARY:The Future of Black Histories: Uplifting Black Youth Voices
DESCRIPTION:History does not stay in the past. The present is shaped by history\, and the present determines the future. Accordingly\, Black youth are central to the future of Black History.   \n\n\n\nJoin Kelowna Museums at the Laurel Packinghouse for a panel discussion between Tasia Valencia\, Dr. Girvan\, and Dr. Asiyanbi. Listen to diverse perspectives on topics such as Black erasure in the Okanagan and the role of IBPOC youth in climate justice. This generative and critical event is open to the community by donation. Light refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\nFor any inquiries please contact education@kelownamuseums.ca or 250.868.4836. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBios\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAnita Girvan (she/they) is a settler of Afro-Caribbean diaspora and a grateful new arrivant in unceded syilx Okanagan land. Girvan is broadly interested in stories\, language and metaphor and songs as key sites of contestation and reclamation in addressing pressing socio-ecological matters\, like (de)colonization and climate change.  As a mother of 2\, she is informed and inspired by Black feminist and coalitional and collaborative approaches to world-building\, including through music and other creative (re)generation. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDr Adeniyi Asiyanbi is an assistant professor of geography in the Department of Community\, Culture and Global Studies at UBC Okanagan. His research applies insights from critical geography and political ecology to the intersection of climate change\, forests and development\, raising questions about power\, social justice and inequity.
