Nov 17 – Nancy Holmes, Faculty of Creative & Critical Studies, UBC Okanagan

“In Flanders Fields” – A Centennial Assessment

November 2015 it will be the 100th anniversary of the publication of Canada’s most famous poem about the First World War, John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields.”  UBC professor and poet Nancy Holmes will look at the poem’s influence, how it has been used to commemorate WW1 and other wars, and why looking at the poem closely is important to do.

About Nancy Holmes – Nancy is an Associate Professor in Creative Writing at The University of British Columbia Okanagan.  She has published five books of poetry, most recently, The Flicker Tree: Okanagan Poems (Ronsdale Press, 2012).   She is also the editor of Open Wide a Wilderness: Canadian Nature Poems (Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2009), an anthology of Canadian nature poetry.  Over the past few years, she has become increasingly active in eco-themed community-based art projects with her students and other artists.  She has published the only full-length academic paper on John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields” (Studies in Canadian Literature) and she helped organize “The Canadian Literature of World War One” conference in Ottawa in the summer of 2014.  For 2015-2016, she is on leave, writing and working on a variety of new projects.
