As soon as the doors were opened to the BC Orchard Industry Museum, there was a clear interest in the other major agricultural pursuit in the Valley – the wine industry. Plans to develop a BC Wine Museum began in 1994 with a review of the Kelowna Museums’ holdings in this area and with a review of its archival resources. Through 1995, the Kelowna Museums began to design the story line and layout of the facility and over the ensuing months secured the space on the main floor of the historic Laurel Packinghouse.
Construction began in 1996 and the BC Wine Museum was opened in September that year. The BC Wine Museum displays historic bottles, labels, wine-making equipment and artefacts from the rich history of viticulture and winemaking – Etruscan, Greek and Chinese – while local Okanagan artefacts and exhibitions explore the history of the region.
British Columbia Wine Label Awards
The BC Wine Museum is the home of the British Columbia Wine Label Awards, held every year in conjunction with the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival. The Wine Label Awards recognizes wineries from across the province for their excellence in design and ingenuity in wine label design and presentation. Awards are given out in the categories of Domestic Label, Overall Presentation, Fruit Wine Label, and Dessert Wine Label. All entries are also entered into the People’s Choice category which allows the public to be the judge and vote on their favorite label. The awards are presented at the Winemaster’s Luncheon in Penticton as part of the Okanagan Wine Festival celebrations.
